What is cellulite?

Cellulite effects up to 85% of the female population. Cellulite is found most commonly on the thighs and buttocks and typically only effects women. Cellulite is related to fatty pockets and connective tissue bands that separate the fat pockets into septae. These bands surround the fat and connect to the skin’s under surface. As a consequence, the fat is compartmentalized and bulges upward and is visible as dimples, divots and contour irregularities. Although weight loss can reduce the fatty pockets and bulging, cellulite most often is unrelated to and doesn’t go away with weight loss. Up until now, cellulite was virtually untreatable. Dr. Robbins of Des Moines Plastic Surgery™ performs Cellulaze™ in Des Moines and the surrounding areas and he is the only plastic surgeon in Central Iowa and one of the only surgeons in the Midwest with this amazing technology.

What is Cellulaze?

Cellulaze™ is the newest and most advanced technology currently available to treat cellulite and all of it’s key causes including the fat pockets and the connective tissue bands. Cellulaze™  reduces the appearance of cellulite in one 60 minute procedure under local anesthesia.

How does Cellulaze at Des Moines Plastic Sufgery work?

Des Moines Cellulaze treatments pinpoint and disrupt dimpled pockets of herniated fat, thermally cut connective tissue bands that trap the fat, and builds collagen and elastin by thermal laser effects which results in thicker, tighter, healthier skin. Cellulaze is the only minimally invasive laser platform on the market with three year data on the effective treatment of cellulite. In one 60 minute treatment, Dr. Robbins can now treat a previously untreatable condition affecting 85% of the female population. Cellulaze is a powerful pulsed Nd:YAG 1440 nm wavelength laser with a SideLaze™ fiber with bidirectional laser flow delivery. The laser fiber is inserted through a 2mm incision and the laser is directed at the fatty tissue where microbubbles form at the laser tip and the fat and connective tissue bands are infused with laser energy (1440 nm wavelength is highly absorbed by fatty tissue) and disrupts dimpled pockets of herniated fat that causes cellulite. Next, the SideLaze™ fiber is targeted at the fibrous septae to release these bands and smooth the skin’s surface. Finally, the SideLaze™ laser is turned upwards to gently heat the skin and promote new collagen and elastin for a thicker, stronger, healthier skin surface.

When are results seen?

Optimal results are seen in 3 months.

Are the results long lasting?

Clinical studies have indicated that results are uniformly present for more than one year after the procedure.

Does the procedure hurt or require general anesthesia?

Local anesthesia is all that is required. No general anesthesia or operating room is necessary. Even large areas of cellulite can be treated in one setting under local anesthesia only.

What is the downtime and recovery?

Mild discomfort and bruising is expected for 1 week after the procedure. Normal activities and work can be resumed as soon as you feel comfortable, typically no more than 1-2 days. Strenuous activity should be avoided for a week. Some patients experience numbness to the treated area that can last a few months and are simply a mild nuisance.

What do clinical studies show with Cellulaze treatments?

In a patient clinical study, a single Cellulaze™ treatment was found to improve the appearance of cellulite for one year or more with 93% patient satisfaction rate, 29% average increase in skin elasticity at one year after cellulaze compared to baseline, and 25% average increase in skin thickness at one year after Cellulaze compared to baseline.
