What Is Botox?
Botox is an injectable product that contains a substance known as botulinum toxin. This substance can cause the temporary paralysis of muscles when injected into them.
The fine lines and wrinkles that form on our faces are caused by strained facial muscles that have become stiff due to repeated use over the years. When Botox is injected into these facial muscles, it paralyzes them and allows them to relax. This allows the skin that covers these muscles to take on a softer and smoother appearance.
What Issues Can Botox Treat?
Botox is safe to use in areas across the face, including regions that are considered delicate or sensitive. It can be safely used around the eyes, the brow, the forehead, the chin, and the neck. It can be used to treat a wide variety of common wrinkles, such as:
- Crow’s feet
- Frown lines
- Vertical brow wrinkles
- Horizontal forehead creases
- Chin wrinkles
- Vertical neck bands
Botox is also often used for jaw/jawline contouring, and for medical purposes like treatment of migraine headaches and hyperhidrosis (excessive sweating in the armpits and other regions).

Your Botox® Cosmetic Treatment
At Des Moines Plastic Surgery™ and Coachlight Clinic & Spa, our injectable team has completed tens of thousands of injections over their many years of experience. They have helped our practice become part of Allergan’s Elite Black Diamond Partner Program to which we have entered the top 100 aesthetic practices in the United States to administer Allergan products (Botox® Cosmetic, Juvederm® and Latissse®).
During your appointment, you may be asked about your skin care regimen and we will examine the areas of your face you wish to have treated. From this examination, we will choose specific areas for Botox® injection.
Your skin will be thoroughly cleansed around the chosen points of injection. The areas of the face being treated with Botox will be marked to identify precisely where the injections will go. The total time for your treatment will usually not exceed 15 minutes.
Using a special technique, we will use a syringe to inject the Botox® Cosmetic solution into the muscle. While a topical anesthetic may be available, it is usually not necessary.
Once injected into a specific muscle, Botox® Cosmetic works to temporarily treat frown lines, forehead creases, crows feet near the eyes and thick bands in the neck by blocking the chemical signal from the nerve to the muscle that cause wrinkles. This decreases the contraction of the muscle, which causes the overlying fine line or wrinkle to smooth out, giving your skin a smoother, more refreshed appearance.

What to Expect After Your Treatment
Because of the ease and simplicity of Botox injections, there is no recovery period required. However, some patients may prefer to take an hour or two after their treatment to lie down and relax. There may be some redness around the injection sites.
It will take some time to see the results of your Botox treatment. After around five days, you should notice some improvement, and these results will continue to improve over the coming days. Botox results typically last for three to four months.
