SmartLipo Recovery

The recovery time following SmartLipo treatment is relatively short. Patients will typically need to take around two to three days off from work so that they can recover properly. What to expect during your recovery will depend on the areas of the body treated. In most cases, patients can expect to experience some swelling, bruising, and discomfort.

It can take several weeks for the swelling to fully dissipate. A compression garment will need to be worn during the recovery process to help manage swelling and provide support. While many activities can be resumed after some time, you will need to wait until the swelling fully dissipates before you can resume all activities.

Smartlipo™ is the first laser device for LaserBodySculpting™ for fat cell disruption and skin tightening. The procedure is ideal for unwanted fat removal and skin tightening effect. Smartlipo can be used on the face, neck, arms, male breasts, bra line, love handles, abdomen, saddle bags, inner thighs, outer thighs, and knees. We have the first plastic surgeon in Des Moines to offer Smartlipo.

With Smartlipo, there is less bleeding, less bruising, and faster recovery. Most Smartlipo is performed under local anesthesia only. No general anesthesia or operating room costs. Smartlipo is also better at skin tightening because of the laser and therefore is better for areas of unwanted fat where the overlying skin is slightly loose.

Those patients in good health who are at or close to their ideal weight with small localized areas of unwanted fat that do not respond to diet and exercise are considered the best candidates. The Des Moines Smartlipo procedure is commonly performed under local anesthesia alone with the patient awake or mildly sedated with oral sedative medication. The Smartlipo cannula is inserted under the skin into the fatty layer through 1-2 mm incisions. The laser is at the tip of the cannula and the aiming beam can be visualized through the skin allowing us to precisely identify the treatment area. The laser energy at the cannula fiber tip ruptures fat cell membranes and releases fatty oil from the fat cells. This end product of fatty oil from fat cell membrane disruption is aspirated from the site. The Smartlipo at Des Moines Plastic Surgery™ works differently from traditional liposuction. Smartlipo disrupts fat cells by heat and a photodistruptive action, or shattering of the fat cell membrane. The laser coagulates or seals off blood vessels resulting in less bleeding, less bruising, and less trauma to the skin and deeper tissues. This results in less downtime and faster recovery. Smartlipo also promotes tissue tightening through bulk laser heating and tissue coagulation.
