Types of Hair Restoration

There are 2 main types of hair restoration techniques used today: the “strip” method and Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE). NeoGraft™ is the type of FUE hair replacement therapy used by Des Moines Plastic Surgery™.

The procedure of FUE involves gently removing hair follicles one by one. A single graft contains from 1-3 individual hair follicles. The traditional strip method approach involves incisions in the scalp to remove a strip of the hair-bearing skin of the scalp.

NeoGraft™ FUE on the other hand, uses a tiny 1 mm punch to remove individual follicles from the donor site. This technique has much less bleeding, no excision of skin, no sutures, and much faster recovery. The transplanted hair follicles using NeoGraft™ are natural and grow just like normal hair.

The “strip” method  involves removing a strip of scalp from the back of the head and dissecting it into individual grafts to be transplanted. This often results in a linear scar and a longer recovery. In contrast,  

NeoGraft is a form of FUE (Follicular Unit Extraction) that uses pneumatic controls to extract individual follicles directly from the scalp without a scalpel or stitches.

This method reduces the risk of scarring and typically leads to a quicker, less painful recovery. During a NeoGraft treatment, Dr. Robbins will start by administering local anesthesia. The NeoGraft handpiece gently extracts individual micro hair grafts from the hair-bearing scalp. The NeoGraft system utilizes advanced technology to swiftly remove hair follicles from the donor site and place them in thinning or balding areas.

By employing controlled pneumatic pressure, the grafts are smoothly extracted without pulling or twisting, minimizing the risk of damage. Notably, NeoGraft boasts faster transplantation compared to traditional methods, allowing for earlier re-implantation of the grafts. This approach ensures robust grafts and enhances the overall success of the transplantation process. 

Following the NeoGraft hair transplant, Dr. Robbins will ensure all grafts are securely in place. Following this, a thorough cleansing of the affected areas is performed. Post-treatment, patients will be given detailed instructions on how to care for the grafts, including when and how to use specific shampoos, antiseptics, and other hair products prescribed for optimal healing.  

One of the benefits of this procedure is the lack of incisions, ruling out the need for suture removal and significantly reducing discomfort post-operation. While some drainage may occur in the first 24 hours, it is usually minimal and not a cause for concern. 

Patients are advised to avoid vigorous activities for two weeks after the procedure to protect the delicate new grafts. During the initial week post-procedure, it’s normal to notice the grafts appear slightly raised; they will form scabs and may shed within three to four days. This shedding is an expected and healthy part of the recovery process 

Frequently Asked Questions

Patients who would like the option of wearing a very short haircut in the back or sides of their scalp, or those who want the least amount of activity restriction (e.g. athletes) after their hair transplant procedure, may be good candidates for FUE with NeoGraft™. FUE can also be used for ‘scar camouflage’ procedures for patients who have had prior “Strip” procedures, as well as for body hair transplants. 

Yes. Because FUE/NeoGraft™ is a minimally invasive procedure, it is a viable option for both men and women looking to restore their own living and growing hair with transplantation. 

We will perform NeoGraft™ hair transplantation using local anesthesia. The NeoGraft handpiece gently extracts individual micro hair grafts from hair bearing scalp. Each harvested graft is then placed into thinning or balding areas of the head.

Each graft may contain 1-3 individual hair follicles. Once the transplant is complete, you will be able to return home and can resume your usual activities within a few days. After about 2 to 3 weeks, the transplanted hair will fall out but the transplanted hair follicle bulbs will remain under the skin. After 4 to 6 months, you will notice significant hair growth with final results after about 9 months to 1 year. 

98% success rate – that is, 98% of the transplanted grafts will survive and grow as normal hair.

98% of the grafted hairs will grow 

250-3000 grafts in a session. 2500 grafts will cover an area about the size of a CD. More than 2500 grafts can be grafted but would require more than one session. 

It depends on the number of grafts. 500 grafts take about 4 hours. 2500 grafts take about 8 hours (4 hours to harvest the hair and 4 hours to implant). Patients can read, listen to music, watch TV, or use their computer. For longer cases, the patient will be provided a lunch break. 

About 9-12 months, the new hair will begin to grow normally. It takes this long because of the natural slow growth process of hair. 

A few days off is typical but some patients return the next day to work and social activities. Strenuous activity should be avoided for a week. 

NeoGraft treatment causes very little pain. To ensure comfort, a local anesthetic is administered to the treatment site before the procedure starts, reducing the likelihood of substantial pain throughout the transplantation process. Patients often experience only a slight sensation of pressure or vibration, which typically doesn’t cause discomfort. 

Most people return to work and other normal activities within a few days post-surgery. Mild soreness and numbness may be present for the first week, and any mild swelling typically subsides after about 3 to 5 days. It’s important to follow your surgeon’s post-operative care instructions, which may include avoiding strenuous activities for at least a week to ensure optimal healing.
