What is Waxing?

Coachlight Clinic & Spa in West Des Moines, Iowa offers exceptional waxing services. Say goodbye to the hassle of shaving before hitting the beach in your favorite swimsuit and enjoy smooth, silky skin anytime!

Waxing is an effective method of hair removal that extracts hair from the root. With results lasting from two to eight weeks, you’ll enjoy smooth skin for long periods. Whether it’s your eyebrows, face, bikini area, legs, arms, back, abdomen, or feet, almost any part of your body can be waxed.  Achieve Smooth and Radiant Skin at Coachlight Clinic and Spa.

How Does Waxing Work?

During waxing, a thin layer of wax is applied to the skin, followed by the quick removal of a cloth or paper strip against the direction of hair growth. This process not only eliminates the hair but also removes the wax, leaving you with a beautifully smooth finish.

Benefits of a Waxing Treatment

Waxing offers several benefits over other hair removal methods, such as shaving. Not only does it provide longer-lasting results, but it also exfoliates the skin, leaving it smoother and softer. Additionally, waxing can help reduce hair growth and minimize the occurrence of ingrown hairs, eliminating the need for frequent waxing sessions.

Waxing vs. Other Hair Removal Treatments

Waxing is a popular choice for many because of its long-lasting results and ability to slow down hair regrowth. Unlike shaving or depilatory creams, waxing removes hair from the root, leading to longer growth cycles. Additionally, waxing offers a cost and time-efficient solution, lasting several weeks. In contrast, electrolysis and laser hair removal are more expensive alternatives.

Before, During, and After

What To Expect Before a Waxing Treatment

Prior to a waxing treatment, prepare the skin by cleansing it with a gentle cleanser and removing any excess moisture.  Refrain from applying lotions or oils to the treated area for at least 24 hours before your appointment.  Also, inform your esthetician of any pre-existing skin conditions to ensure a customized treatment.

What To Expect During a Waxing Treatment

During treatment, a warm wax is applied to the skin in the direction of hair growth and then quickly removed with a cloth strip. While it can be mildly uncomfortable, most people find the pain to be bearable and worth the results.

What To Expect After a Waxing Treatment

Following treatment, you may experience redness and sensitivity for a few days. Avoid sun exposure, swimming, and wearing tight clothing that can irritate the area for 2 days. By providing proper care, the smoothness of your waxed skin can last for several weeks.

Frequently Asked Questions

To ensure optimal results, have a minimum of 1/4 inch of hair growth (1/2 inch for coarse hair) before waxing. This typically corresponds to a week to 2 weeks of hair regrowth after shaving. Exfoliate with a loofah the day before your waxing appointment to minimize discomfort.

There may be discomfort and tenderness in the treated area. However, the pain experienced during waxing can vary greatly depending on an individual’s pain tolerance, the area waxed, and the skill level of the esthetician.

The duration of waxing varies depending on the individual and their genes. Typically, waxing lasts 4 to 8 weeks, significantly longer than shaving.

Skin irritations and allergic reactions to waxing are generally mild and temporary. They usually subside on their own within a few days. Avoid scratching these rashes after waxing; use a cool compress or washcloth to soothe your skin.

There are a variety of options, each with its distinct qualities and benefits. Hard wax, for example, is a popular choice for sensitive areas like the face, as it adheres only to the hair and not the skin. Soft wax, on the other hand, is better suited for larger areas like the legs or arms, as it can cover a wider surface area. Sugar wax, made from natural ingredients like sugar and lemon juice, is another option gaining popularity due to its gentleness on the skin. Ultimately, the type of wax that is right for you depends on your needs and preferences.

Most people schedule their appointments every four to six weeks. This allows enough time for your hair to grow to the proper length but not so long that it’s difficult to remove.

While the FDA does not set a specific age limit for waxing, they have approved it for individuals aged 12 and above. However, it’s crucial to consider factors beyond age, such as skin sensitivity and medical conditions, to determine the suitability of waxing.

Waxing can be performed on sensitive skin with some precautions and considerations. First, find a waxing professional with experience working with sensitive skin and using gentle waxing products. At Coachlight Clinic & Spa, an award-winning medical spa and aesthetics practice, we prioritize offering results-driven treatments and an exceptional experience. Moreover, proper skin preparation is crucial before your waxing session. Avoid exfoliants or harsh products in the days leading up to your appointment. With care, even those with sensitive skin can enjoy the benefits of waxing, such as smooth, hair-free skin.

Waxing may not be recommended for individuals with diabetes, varicose veins, or poor circulation due to heightened susceptibility to infection. Similarly, clients taking Accutane or using Retin A, Renova, Differin, or other skin-thinning acne medications should avoid waxing.

While waxing is considered safe for pregnant women,  some women may experience heightened sensitivity during pregnancy. As a result, waxing may be more uncomfortable than usual for them.

To prevent the discomfort of ingrown hairs, understand how they occur. When hair grows inward instead of outward, it can cause painful bumps and redness. You can take several steps to minimize the risk of ingrown hairs. Keep your skin moisturized and exfoliated to prevent hair from becoming trapped. Avoid wearing tight clothing that can rub against the waxed area and contribute to ingrown hairs. By following these simple steps, you can achieve silky smooth, hair-free skin without the irritation of ingrown hairs.

While there is no hard-and-fast rule, generally, it is recommended that women schedule their bikini wax between five days before and five days after their menstrual cycle. This is because the skin tends to be less sensitive at this time, making the waxing process less painful overall.

Choosing a gentle wax specifically formulated for the face is crucial because the skin on your face is more sensitive compared to other parts of your body. Avoid waxing over pre-existing skin conditions or if you are using certain medications.

Hot wax requires heating up prior to application and is applied in a thicker layer that grips the hair firmly, whereas cold wax strips are pre-coated with wax and are applied directly onto the skin with some pressure, pulling hair out from the roots when removed.

The time required for a waxing appointment depends on what part of the body you are getting waxed and the amount of hair present. For example, waxing eyebrows typically takes 15-20 minutes, whereas waxing multiple areas can take an hour or longer.
