Tirzepatide Frequently Asked Questions

What Is The Difference Between Tirzepatide And Semiglutide?

In the prescription medication industry, semaglutide, when marketed for weight loss, is administered at a higher dose and called Wegovy; at a lower dose, it’s marketed for diabetes and sold as Ozempic.  Tirzepatide is sold under the brand name Mounjaro for it’s FDA approval to treat diabetes.

Tirzepatide and semaglutide are both medications currently being studied and developed for the treatment of type 2 diabetes and obesity. While they belong to the same class of drugs called glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) receptor agonists and share some similarities, some differences between tirzepatide and semaglutide include:

  • Mechanism of action: Tirzepatide is a dual glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide (GIP) and GLP-1 receptor agonist. It activates both the GIP and GLP-1 receptors, which helps regulate blood sugar levels and promote weight loss. Semaglutide, on the other hand, is a selective (singular) GLP-1 receptor agonist. It primarily targets and activates the GLP-1 receptor, leading to improved glycemic control and potential weight loss.
  • Weight loss potential: Both tirzepatide and semaglutide have demonstrated significant potential for weight loss in clinical trials. However, tirzepatide has shown a greater weight loss effect compared to semaglutide. Studies have indicated that tirzepatide may lead to more substantial weight reduction in individuals with obesity or overweight compared to semaglutide.

Tirzepatide Treatments At Des Moines Plastic Surgery & Coachlight – What Is The Process?

PHONE CONSULTATION: All guests interested in Tirzepatide injectable treatments must complete an initial complimentary phone consultation to determine if they’re a good candidate. During the consultation, you and your provider will review your health history and discuss the treatment, expectations, and side effects in full detail. Should the guest be determined a candidate and want to move forward with treatments, an appointment for a first dose can be scheduled.

FIRST VISIT & 8-WEEK INITIAL PROGRAM: During the first appointment & dose, you will be weighed, have your body measurements taken, review best lifestyle practices and expectations while taking Tirzepatide treatments, and your provider will administer your first dose. Our Tirzepatide program is offered in a series of eight once-a-week treatments, and the convenience offered is that after your first dose, the subsequent seven doses can be taken home with you and administered by you every week. You can schedule your first dose at either our Ankeny or West Des Moines Coachlight locations. After completing your final (eighth) dose, you will visit our office for a follow-up to review your weight loss results and determine the next steps, whether you continue with additional treatments and the provider will determine appropriate dosage adjustments.

MAINTENANCE DOSES & CONTINUED WEIGHT LOSS OBJECTIVES: After completing the initial 8 weeks of treatments, you and your provider will review your progress and long-term weight loss goals. If you want to maintain your current weight, please expect a recommendation that you continue treatments at a maintenance dose with an overall goal of tapering down your dose level, and eventually entering a scenario where you no longer need/want to receive weekly treatments. If you are wanting to lose additional weight, your provider will make a continued weekly dosage plan and recommendation.

Please keep in mind that clinical studies of both tirzepatide and semaglutide show weight loss in subjects that were receiving the medication for an average of 3 to 6 months at a minimum. Establishing long-term, healthy lifestyle habits and behaviors through diet and activity is critical to overall long-term weight loss and your accountability to these changes will help to maintain any weight loss result when utilizing Tirzepatide treatments.

How Much Do Tirzepatide Treatments Cost?

The Tirzepatide Treatment Program at Des Moines Plastic Surgery & Coachlight is an initial eight-week dosed program. ANSWER: While it is true the skin can technically change with a sudden or rapid weight loss, there is not any consistent predictability on this and would vary guest to guest. If guests ever have aesthetic concerns associated with the appearance of lost volume and/or hollowness, we recommend the collagen stimulator Sculptra or scheduling a filler consultation to see what you’re an ideal candidate for.

ANSWER: Yes – guests can receive Tirzepatide treatments while doing a series of CoolSculpting treatments to help further enhance their desired body contouring results.

ANSWER: The overall goal of Tirzepatide treatments for weight loss is to get you to your desired healthy goal weight first, and then through maintenance monitoring and management, eventually lower your dosage and ‘wean’ you off of the treatment.  Your accountability to a healthy diet and active lifestyle will directly influence how you sustain actual long-term weight loss.
