These innovations allow for the efficient treatment of large body areas while ensuring patient comfort and eliminating the need for recovery time.

Leave behind the dated, cumbersome hair removal techniques and step into the age of laser hair removal for graceful beauty.

What is Laser Hair Removal?

Laser hair removal utilizes the principle of selective photothermolysis, targeting the hair from the shaft down to the root. During this process, the hair’s natural pigment, melanin, captures the laser light projected at a specific wavelength. This rapid absorption generates heat leading to thermal damage to the hair follicle and inhibiting its ability to regenerate.

How Does Laser Hair Removal Work?

Harnessing the precision of advanced laser technology, our system zeroes in on hair follicles to effectively obliterate them, hindering the emergence of new growth.

Bothersome hair across various body areas is decreased while preserving the integrity and appearance of the skin around the treated zones.

Benefits of a Laser Hair Removal Treatment

With Laser Hair Removal you can experience the simplicity and comfort of removing unwelcome body and facial hair without the nuisance. Forego irritating shaves, rashes, and ingrown hairs, welcome silky, glowing skin, and observe a reduction in hair growth and nearly pain-free sessions that effortlessly fit into your hectic life.

Types of Hair Removal Treatments

There are various types of hair removal treatments.  Waxing pulls hair out from the roots, promising silky smooth skin for weeks, but it’s not for the faint-hearted. Shaving offers a quick and painless solution, though its results are fleeting, giving rise to daily or weekly rituals to maintain that hair-free finish. Electrolysis, another hair removal contender, touts permanence in results but requires a high threshold for discomfort and repeated sessions over time.

Before, During, and After

What To Expect Before A Laser Hair Removal Treatment

Our expert team in the greater Des Moines area consists of skilled and knowledgeable providers passionate about helping you achieve your aesthetic goals. Before treatment, you will have a complimentary consultation to discuss the procedure, answer questions, and receive pre-care instructions like shaving and forgoing certain activities, such as tweezing or sunbathing.

What To Expect During A Laser Hair Removal Treatment

During treatment, a beam of focused light is directed at the hair follicles; the laser damages them, stopping hair production. Though you may feel mild discomfort for a few seconds, the cooling system ensures a comforting experience.

You will experience the sensation of the vacuum gently pulling your skin into the handpiece, designed to stretch the skin thin and bring the hair follicles closer to the laser. This innovative method reduces discomfort and protects the surrounding skin. Many patients describe the sensation as a light pinch or tug rather than the sharp “snaps” often associated with other lasers.

What To Expect After A Laser Hair Removal Treatment

It’s normal to experience redness and swelling like a mild sunburn in the treated areas. These effects generally subside quickly.

There is typically no downtime, and most people return to normal activities immediately after treatment.

High-Speed Laser Hair Removal at Coachlight

The LightSheer 800 nm diode lasers were introduced in 1998 and have long been considered the ‘gold standard’ in terms of hair reduction. It is important to note that the sole purpose and engineering of the LightSheer Duet is for laser hair reduction. It is a medical device and should not be confused with the Pulsed Dye, IPL or BBL, as these are not technically lasers and are not specialized for hair removal.

Coachlight specifically uses the LightSheer Duet which offers a revolutionizing approach to laser hair removal. Laser hair removal, a popular solution for unwanted body hair, has been limited in the past by the guest’s need to invest valuable time and accept treatment discomfort to achieve desired results. These limitations can be significant when treating larger body areas such as shoulders, back, chest or legs.

At Coachlight we have radically changed the guest experience of laser hair removal and were first in our market to do so. The High Speed LightSheer with its dramatically increased spot size of 22 mm x 35 mm combined with innovative vacuum-assist technology enables us to treat larger areas such as the back and legs comfortably in about 15-20 minutes, without topical anesthetics and treatment gels.

  • Integrated vacuum-assist technology enhances light absorption, improves treatment comfort
  • No topical anesthetic is required, eliminating lengthy treatment preparation
  • No treatment gel is neccessary during high-speed treatment
  • High-Speed LightSheer Duet reduces treatment times by up to 75%

This laser provides hair reduction on most skin types. It delivers an intense but gentle burst of light to the targeted area. The laser is attracted to the pigment in the hair follicle so the darker the hair being treated means better results. It is important to avoid sun exposure to the treated area approximately 4-6 weeks prior to treatment and during your treatments. No downtime or recovery time will be needed after treatment.

Laser Hair Removal Frequently Asked Questions

During a complimentary consultation your provider will make a session treatment recommendation based on the area(s) you’re wanting to have treated. Expect a minimum package recommendation of six sessions per area with a cadence of each treatment being 4-6 weeks apart.

We offer laser hair removal treatments in single sessions as well as packages. To start the laser hair removal process, guests are strongly recommended to do this in a packaged series. Single sessions are “available”, however, do not expect the same reduction and or removal results as you would experience in a compliant packaged series that is spaced 4-6 weeks apart in each session. Packages of laser hair removal start at $480 for a series of six treatments, and pricing depends on area and size of area being treated.

During a consultation, after determining you’re a candidate for the area you’re wanting to have treated, your provider will provide you with a quote for the areas you’re interested in having treated.

Financing options, including 0% interest, are available via CareCredit.

Yes it is technically possible after completing a course of treatments, that you may experience some sparse and/or fine hairs in the treated area. This varies widely person to person. You may not see ANY regrowth for many years, and laser hair removal may very well provide permanent results. After completing a recommended package series with us on the area you want treated, you an option for single session treatments to address additional unwanted hairs that the laser may target. Your provider will assess this scenario and make a recommendation for you.

Please keep in mind some hairs “feel” coarse in nature but are light/gray/white in color. A laser will NOT be able to target and remove these lighter/white hairs. This is something to keep in mind as you age and hairs in certain areas that may be black/dark now can turn gray/white with age. Treating unwanted hair when it is black/dark is strongly recommended as no laser is able to accommodate removal when it turns gray/white, regardless of area or how coarse it is.

The treatment requires no topical anesthetic cream. The laser has a patented cooling system to offer you comfort during the procedure using the smaller ET handpiece. When using the larger HS handpiece on large body areas the vacuum-assisted technology allows for more comfort as well. You may experience a warm or tingling sensation during the treatment or what feels like the flick of a rubber band on your skin.

Dark, coarse hair responds best to treatment. It is important to treat the area during the hair growth cycle. Treatments are recommended every 4-8 weeks. Lumenis has revolutionized the Gold Standard LightSheer with vacuum-assist technology and by dramatically increasing the spot size to 22 x 35 mm.

The LightSheer enables us to treat backs and legs comfortably in only 15 to 20 minutes with no topical anesthetic. Treatment times are decreased by 75% compared to other laser systems.

Coachlight at Des Moines Plastic Surgery™ is the only plastic surgery practice in Des Moines that owns the Lumenis Light Sheer Duet Hair removal laser which is considered the “gold standard” of laser hair removal systems. We have the LightSheer ET handpiece with ChillTip™ continuous contact cooling for the treatment of facial hair, bikini area, and underarms.

The Laser Center also has the NEW LightSheer HS handpiece, which is the largest spot size (treatment head) with an integrated vacuum-assisted technology for nearly painless, rapid treatment of large areas such as the legs and back. There is no better or faster technology on the market today. Coachlight offers you the best and most advanced treatment options on the market today for laser hair removal.

The system emits a near-infrared laser light that is absorbed by the pigment located in the hair follicle. The laser is pulsed, or turned on, for only a fraction of a second. The duration of each pulse is just long enough to damage the follicle, while the system’s unique, patented contact-cooling handpiece, the ChillTip, helps protect the skin by conductive cooling during the laser energy delivery.

Averaged throughout the treatments, a 15-20% reduction is received during each session. Post-treatment reactions vary depending on the coarseness, density, and color of the hair and area being treated.

Hair grows in three distinct stages in the follicle. The active growth stage is the Anagen stage. The next stage of growth is the dormant stage which is called the Catagen stage. The last stage of growth is called the Telogen stage which is when the hair follicle is shedding or falling out. The laser works on the hair follicle when it is in the growth or Anagen stage. That is why several treatments are needed in order to see hair reduction.

The LightSheer Diode Laser System was designed from the ground up for laser hair removal, making it the standard in the industry. This is why we purchased this laser. Lumenis has been in the business of making medical and cosmetic lasers for more than 30 years.

The LightSheer Duet was specifically designed for hair reduction. It is used only for hair removal which is different from other laser hair reduction machines which claim to do several other “laser” type treatments. (i.e. skin tightening, skin rejuvenation, broken capillaries, etc.)

The LightSheer Duet Laser System’s design provides for enhanced comfort during treatment, increased speed and accuracy and improved safety. Since the system uses a unique cooling hand piece, it minimizes skin irritation that other methods may create. Since it is non-invasive (no needles to penetrate the skin), the risk of introducing bacteria into the skin is reduced.

Due to the system being fast, it allows for larger areas to be treated, considerably increasing the efficiency of the hair removal process. Finally, the LightSheer Duet Laser is a precise instrument that can be adjusted to damage only the hair follicle while minimally affecting the surrounding skin.

The LightSheer Duet laser system safely and effectively treats all skin types. For darker skin types, appropriate laser settings are adjusted to prevent damage to the skin. It does take longer per treatment time to treat darker skin types. Using the appropriate treatment parameters, however, people with all skin types can benefit from laser hair removal with the LightSheer Duet.

It is extremely important for the treated area to not be in the sun or tanned during your treatments. To get the most effective treatment possible and avoid complications we ask that you avoid sun exposure, real or artificial including self tanners. We will ask that you use a 30-45 SPF and to cover the area being treated.

There is not ONE laser that works on white, red, or gray hair. The laser is more effective if the hair is dark and coarse because the laser is attracted to the melanin/pigmentation of the hair.

To determine what skin type you are, the Fitzpatrick Classification Scale is often used. See below. The LightSheer Duet works on all skin types. Please be aware that if you are a Skin Type IV, V, or VI, there is a point when the hairs become too light and fine and there is no longer a difference between the hair and the skin color to see continued results.

For more information assessing your Fitzpatrick Skin Type please see the Skin Cancer Foundation website.

SKIN TYPESKIN COLORCHARACTERISTICS
IWhite; very fair; red or blond hair; blue eyes; frecklesAlways burns, never tans
IIWhite; fair; red or blond hair; blue, hazel,or green eyesUsually burns, tans with difficulty
IIICream white; fair with any eye or hair color; very commonSometimes mild burn, gradually tans
IVBrown; typical Mediterranean caucasian skinRarely burns, tans with ease
VDark Brown; mid-eastern skin typesVery rarely burns, tans very easily
VIBlackNever burns, tans very easily

Results are typically long-lasting, and the treatment can even achieve permanent hair removal in some cases.

The LightSheer laser has been cleared by the FDA for hair removal and hair reduction on all skin types. To achieve a satisfactory level of clearance, 6 to 8 treatments are typically required 6 to 8 weeks apart. The LightSheer Duet was the first to be cleared by the FDA for eliminating hair. That is defined by the FDA as 85% or greater hair reduction.

After 6 to 8 treatments, there may be fine and lighter-colored hairs that do not respond to laser treatments. Also, months or years after your last treatment, you may see new hair growth. This may be caused by stress, pregnancy, allergies, medications, menopause, etc. More treatments will be needed in order to treat that new hair growth.

Before coming in for a treatment, all hair must be shaved to the skin. A $25 shave charge will be assessed each time the laser technician has to shave the area. The hairs must be shaved because the heat of the laser is directed to the hair in the follicle which then effectively disables the root.

You must refrain from tweezing, threading, sugaring, and waxing a minimum of 2 weeks before a laser hair reduction treatment on the face. If you are doing any other parts of the body, a minimum of 4 weeks is required. If it is your first treatment on a large area of the body we may ask you to leave a 1 in by 1 in patch of the most dense area of the hair so we can assess coarseness and color of the hair.

During the laser hair reduction treatments, you should not tweeze or wax the treatment area. You may shave the area as often as needed though. For the best results and for your safety we ask that you keep your skin as light as possible which means refrain from sun exposure (includes self tanners, artificial tanning, and sun tanning) to the treatment area and use 30-45 SPF lotion or greater.

Laser hair reduction treatment can be done on virtually any area of the body that has hair. Below is a list of areas of the body where laser hair reduction treatments are done at Coachlight.

Small Areas:
Upper lip, chin, ears, unibrow, hands, feet, sideburns, navel/trail, breast/areola only, female chest, cheeks.

Medium Areas:
Front of neck, back of neck, shoulders, upper lip & chin, standard bikini, forearms, lower back, upper back, underarms.

Large Areas:
Full back, full male chest, full arm, brazilian bikini, buttocks, lower leg, full leg, upper thighs, abdomen, full face.

Adverse reactions to the treatment are infrequent and generally mild when they occur. Such reactions can manifest as slight redness and swelling at the hair follicle site, which signifies that the treatment is taking effect.

Occasionally, individuals might experience a slight burning sensation that can persist for an hour. Fortunately, the downtime is negligible, allowing most individuals to resume their regular activities immediately. Complications from the LightSheer diode laser are uncommon. When complications happen, they typically present as skin burns, potentially resulting in blisters or scabs. Less commonly, one might experience changes in skin pigmentation, referred to as hyperpigmentation or hyperpigmentation.

Laser Hair Reduction is a treatment that effectively removes facial hair from the upper lip, chin, unibrow, cheeks, sideburns, and the entire face.

The sensation experienced during the light pulse can vary from individual to individual, often described as a slight pinching or tingling feeling. Tolerance levels can differ, influenced by individual pain sensitivity, the specific area undergoing treatment, and hair characteristics such as color and density. Typically, patients do not need pain relief or anesthetics for this procedure.

Nevertheless, some may apply a topical numbing cream (EMLA) to more delicate regions. TheLightSheer Duet system features an innovative sapphire cooling tip that reduces skin temperature, providing a numbing effect, while the use of chilled gel further aids in minimizing any potential discomfort.

Avoid Laser Hair Removal while pregnant or breastfeeding, as its safety during pregnancy, has not been confirmed by studies on humans.

The underarms, bikini line, and upper lip are typically sensitive areas for laser hair removal. However, the LightSheer Duet system offers cooling technologies like the system’s sapphire cooling tip and chilled get to alleviate discomfort effectively.
