What Is miraDry?
MiraDry is a revolutionary non-invasive FDA-cleared treatment for permanently eliminating underarm sweat and odor glands, also known as axillary hyperhidrosis. Using electromagnetic energy, miraDry targets and destroys these glands in the armpits. Not only does it significantly reduce underarm sweat and odor, but it also helps decrease underarm hair.
How Does miraDry Work?
MiraDry’s technology uses thermal energy to target the sweat and odor glands in your underarm area. This heat causes thermolysis, permanently destroying the glands while cooling the skin above them. Because hair follicles are located near sweat glands, many are also eliminated. What To Expect Before a miraDry Treatment
Before your miraDry treatment, shave your underarms 3–4 days in advance. This allows for some hair growth, which helps in accurately identifying the treatment area. On the day of your appointment, avoid applying deodorant or antiperspirant. The miraDry procedure is performed under local anesthetic and typically takes 1.5 to 2 hours.
What To Expect During a miraDry Treatment
To ensure your comfort, we will use tumescent local anesthesia to numb your underarms. We’ll then map the treatment area by marking your skin. The miraDry device will be gently passed over your skin to deliver electromagnetic energy, effectively targeting and eliminating the sweat glands.
What To Expect After a miraDry Treatment
After undergoing a miraDry treatment, most patients will experience swelling and tenderness in the treated area for about 3 to 7 days. While the initial results are immediate, you will notice continued sweat and odor reduction over the next few weeks. The complete results are typically seen at around 3 months.

The miraDry procedure is quick, non-invasive and provides a lasting solution for excessive underarm sweat. The handpiece from the miraDry System, when placed on the underarm, delivers precisely controlled energy to the region where the sweat glands reside and treats sweat glands non-invasively. The sweat glands don’t grow back, resulting in a dramatic and lasting reduction of underarm sweat.
The procedure involves no surgical incisions or cuts. A nurse at Coachlight Clinic & Spa Des Moines Plastic Surgery™ customizes treatment for each underarm area with multiple placements of the miraDry handpiece. Local anesthesia is administered to the underarms prior to the procedure to maintain comfort. Your office visit appointment will generally last about an hour. Two procedures spaced three months apart are required to maximize the results and duration.
There is minimal to no downtime following the procedure. We will likely recommend a mild over-the-counter pain medication and use of ice packs for a few days. You should be able to return to normal activities or work right after the procedure, and you can typically resume exercise within several days. Some localized soreness or swelling is normal, and typically clears within a few weeks. Some patients have short-term altered sensation in the skin of their underarms or upper arms, which gradually disappears.
Most patients report a dramatic reduction of their sweat – in a recent clinical study1, the average sweat reduction was 82%. You should see a reduction in sweat immediately after treatment. As with any medical procedure, results will vary by person.
The results are lasting because the sweat glands do not come back or regenerate after they have been treated. The miraDry procedure uses a safe, non-invasive technology that is FDA-cleared to target sweat glands in the underarm.
Your body contains over 4 million sweat glands, with only about 2% located in the underarms. Eliminating this 2% will not affect the body’s ability to cool itself.
Other treatment options are designed to temporarily disable the sweat glands, or involve surgery which contains inherent risks. Only the miraDry procedure provides a lasting solution with a non-invasive treatment.
If embarrassing underarm sweat outbreaks, stained clothing or frequent antiperspirant application interfere with your daily life, then you may be a good candidate for the miraDry procedure.
MiraDry is primarily designed to target sweat glands. It also has the added benefit of affecting hair follicles. Studies have shown that it can remove up to 70 percent of underarm hair, making hair reduction a secondary advantage of the procedure.
Treatment times can vary, but most sessions typically last about an hour. You can return to your normal activities or work immediately after the procedure.
Most patients ice the treated area and rest for a day after the procedure. Exercise can typically be resumed within a few days. During the initial recovery period, patients often use pain relievers like ibuprofen (Advil/Motrin). Common side effects include underarm swelling, arm, or chest, numbness, bruising, sensitivity, and bumps in the treated area. These symptoms generally subside within a few days after treatment.
You can expect a significant and lasting reduction in sweating after just one treatment with miraDry. Once the sweat glands are destroyed, they do not regenerate. On average, patients experience over 80% reduction in sweat after a single session. Results can vary from person to person, but most achieve their desired outcome with one treatment. However, 25% to 35% of patients opt for a second treatment to enhance their results.
